What happens when a famous writer gets a chance to look at the Recording Angel's ledger of his life, only to find his "good deeds" have been clocked as sins?

Jerome K. Jerome delivers a magnificent collection of satirical essays and stories that kicks off with one of the most brilliant comedic premises of his career. The book opens with the Author recounting a vivid, peculiar dream in which he ascends to the heavens and confronts the Recording Angel. Eagerly expecting to see a glowing account of his earthly virtues, his generous public donations, and his honorable character, the Author is horrified when the Angel reveals that the ledger tells a very different story.

The celestial bureaucrat casually explains that the Author's highly publicized acts of charity and kindness were actually driven by social vanity and ego, meaning they’ve been mistakenly, or perhaps accurately, recorded as sins of pride!

This hilarious, ego-deflating celestial encounter sets a wonderfully cynical tone for the rest of the volume. Across an eclectic series of conversational chapters, Jerome trains his razor-sharp observational wit on the glaring hypocrisy of Edwardian society. He explores the performative nature of modern philanthropy, the absurd expectations placed on creative artists, and the bizarre mismatch between human intentions and actual outcomes. From mocking the middle-class taste in literature to whimsically imagining how much simpler life would be if humans hadn't evolved past having tails, Jerome balances sharp social critique with his signature warmth and irony.
